Mental Toughness

Embarking on a new endeavor is intimidating, right? It’s a multi-layered fear—we’re uneasy about stepping out of our comfort zones. We often stick to our familiar routines: morning coffee, leaving by 7:00 AM, taking the main street northbound, exiting at 33, and turning right. You catch my drift, don’t you?

Yet we don’t really want this for our children, do we?

Picture this scenario:

“Hey Dad, I want to be an Astronaut when I grow up”

“Well kid, life is better if you choose the straightforward path. It’s best to work at the office. I’ve shown you the way. Take main street to exit 33 and turn right…”

If it is not advice we give our children, why is it acceptable advice to give ourselves?

It shouldn’t be, and it doesn’t have to be.

Last summer, Troy Horne gave a talk about mental toughness at my son’s gymnastics center.

What initially began as a young boy’s passion for playing basketball morphed into a father-son ride that beautifully embodies the theme of my podcast—seeking fulfillment through the pursuit of passion.

Once he finished his motivational speech, I realized that Troy's advice is relevant not just for young athletes, but for everyone in how they approach life’s adventures.

Troy and his son, Moses, authored the best-selling book Mental Toughness, chronicling their journey and offering children and parents a roadmap to embrace hard work, patience, perseverance, and, ultimately, success.

Troy has been a professional musician, a lead actor in the Broadway musical Rent, and a familiar face from Star Search and NBC’s The Sing Off. However, his most significant role is that of a father. It’s clear that Troy wholeheartedly embraces this responsibility and will go to great lengths to fulfill his children’s dreams.

Take a moment to listen to my interview with Troy Horne. Let his words inspire you as you embark on your own journey.
